What is orofacial myofunctional therapy?
Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is a type of physical therapy that focuses on proper function of the motor muscles of the face, mouth, and throat to improve functions like breathing, swallowing, speaking, or chewing. OMT is designed to identify and treat the root cause of disorders like tongue thrust, tongue tie, sleep apnea, snoring, improper tongue position, mouth breathing, open mouth posture, clenching/grinding of teeth, TMJ pain, TMJ disorder, and is an integral part of successful tethered oral tissue release outcomes.
Therapy consists of removing muscle compensations, building awareness, and incorporating exercises to restore proper function of the orofacial muscles (the tongue, lips, cheeks, and jaw).
Why proper myofunction matters
Normal function of the orofacial complex includes correct chewing and swallowing pattern, correct breathing pattern, and correct lip and tongue positions. Dysfunction of these normal patterns is referred to as an oral myofunctional disorder, and can have negative effects on the development and function of your airway and overall health. Myofunctional disorders can begin in utero and impact your life more as you age. The earlier the intervention, the more effective the treatment. OMT is beneficial for all ages, but we are especially passionate about preventing dysfunction in children and fostering proper airway function for life.
